This means doing what it takes to keep plants alive and happy, making sure that your property is healthy as well as beautiful. Let’s check out some edging, mulching, and pruning tips.

Edging around garden beds, pruning shrubs and mulching around plants and trees will help keep your property looking tailored and pleasing, but it will also help you maintain the life of your plants. More than keeping your lawn looking great, they’ll help you save time and money by ensuring that your landscaping investment holds up.

Edging Tips

Defining the areas around the different parts of your garden is a great way to structure your landscape. These parameters provide a boundary for plants to hit so that your lawn doesn’t become overrun. This is especially important with vining plants and shrubs that are likely to continue growing.

When you are in the planning phases of your garden, be sure to mark the edges of your garden bed. You can do this with something temporary like spray paint or bricks, or you may choose to create a more permanent boundary, such as a raised bed.

Dig around the edges to create a difference in elevation and then use edging tools to keep the parameters neat. Doing this will help your garden beds stand out and will offer better definition to the different components of your yard.

Mulching Tips

Many use mulch for aesthetic purposes, as it provides a manicured appearance and really completes a garden design. However, mulch is just as practical as it is pretty. Mulch helps soil retain moisture and prevents weed growth.

We recommend adding at least three inches of mulch around trees, shrubs and plants. The reason why is that mulch will help with moisture retention and weed growth, as stated, but will also reduce the risk of lawn mower damage to your plants and will help insulate roots from extreme temperatures. Mulch is simple to apply and typically inexpensive, which makes it a simple way to spruce up any garden area.

Pruning Tips

Pruning refers to the cutting back and maintenance of a plant or tree. Proper pruning helps you maintain your landscape plan by preventing any given plant from overrunning your property. However, pruning also helps minimize disease and encourages further fruiting and flowering of plants. Regular pruning is highly recommended for the healthiest gardens.

When pruning, it is important to keep in mind the original plan. Know how large you would like a plant to grow to, and then prune to keep it within those boundaries. Select the right sized plant to fit a certain area to reduce how often the plant will require pruning.

It is important to recognize that every plant is different, and each species of plant will require different levels of care. Ideal and proper pruning will keep a plant looking natural, conforming to the natural shape of the shrub or tree. Attempting to alter the appearance of the plant through pruning may damage the plant.

Finally, always make sure you are using the right tools. Pruning should be done with clean sharp blades. Otherwise, you may find yourself tearing and crushing branches and leaves, and this could result in serious damage to your plants.
